Types of random packing
Random packing is some particle by different types of geometry. Types of random packing is classified according to their structure as ring, saddle, Berl saddle, sphere and etc.
We will then introduce some typical types of random packing: rasching ring, pall ring, cascade ring, Berl saddle, intalox saddle, and sperical packing.
(1) Rasching ring is developed by F.Rasching in 1914 hasing equivalent outer diamter and height. This type of random packing is rarely used by now as it's not good at liquid & gas distribution, resistence, flux and etc.
(2) Pall ring is improved one basis on rasching ring with opening hole by curved sheet, hasing much resistence and more even distritution rate and flux. Compare to rasching ring, pall ring has 50% more on flux, 30% more on distribution.
(3) Cascade ring is developed basis on pall ring add turnup edge while remove height on bottom. This structure makes it has stronger crushing strength, more even distribution, less resistence, higher processing rate.
By now, cascade ring is the most efficiency ring packing.
(4) Berl saddle is of saddle packing with similar shape with saddle.
Advantage: liquid and gas distributes evenly, high utilization rate on surface area, small resistence
Disvantage: easy to telecope to lead lower processing ratio, small crushing strength.
Due to above features, it's not used commanly in industries.
(5) Intalox saddle is improved basis on berl saddle while will not telecope and has advantages as berl saddle.
Most industries used rasching now is using ceramic intalox saddle.
(6) Other: Spherical packing is made of plastic.
